Any barbell can be bent or damaged by abuse or improper use. Improper use includes, but is not limited to: unloaded bars being dropped; barbells being dropped on hard, non-absorbing surfaces or uneven surfaces; bars left loaded or stored on a rack for an extended period; or moisture entering the sleeve through improper cleaning or harsh environments. Moisture is a particular problem in the current climate with the Coronavirus pandemic. Whilst regular cleaning is promoted it is important to avoid moisture entering the barbell sleeves which can strip the lubricant and lead to rust. metal will corrode on its own without any help from you
Regularly inspect your bar for signs of damage that could impact safe performance and ensure sleeves are rotating as designed. If damage is detected, or you are unsure, please remove from service and seek advice. Sleeve damage is generally linked to improper use or care, but if detected early can often be serviced or repaired.
USE:
- Barbells should only be dropped when loaded with weight, do not drop an unloaded bar.
- Barbells (bars loaded with weights) should only be dropped on platforms or surfaces designed for weightlifting, or a minimum 30 mm rubber flooring. Using inadequate flooring may shorten the life of your product or lead to damage.
- Always use collars on each end of the bar to prevent disc movement during lifts.
- Never use the bar if it shows signs of damage as this may cause injury.
CLEANING AND CARE:
- Clean bars in a horizontal position. Apply a mild soap detergent to a lint free cloth, then wipe down your bar taking care to avoid the area where the sleeve and bar shaft come together.
- Do not allow bars to get wet or allow cleaning fluid to seep into the area where the sleeve and shaft come together. Moisture in the sleeve can impact barbell performance and safety causing rust and degrading the bearings and/or bushings.
- Brush the knurling/bar with a nylon brush after each use to remove chalk or dirt. A steel brush may be used only on steel barbells as this will lead to the barbell finish being scratched and scraped removing the coating from the barbell.
- For disinfection, we recommend alcohol-free, bleach-free wipes. Excessive moisture on the barbell should be avoided.
BEARINGS:
- Stand the bar vertically and apply 5-7 drops of 3:1 lubricant to the inner sleeve side of the barbell, rotating the sleeve while the lubricant is applied.
- Let the oil soak in for approximately 15 minutes. This should be performed on a regular basis – especially in humid environments.
- Wipe away any excess oil using a dry cloth.
STORAGE:
- Store bars empty in either the horizontal or upright position.
- Do not store bars with weights loaded as this could cause the bar to bend.
- Store bars in an indoor climate that is dry and clean.
DO NOT use anything with silicone added as it can dry out the existing lubricant and bearing system.
It’s always a good idea to wipe your bar down after every use. This is especially important because sweat is both acidic and contains salt. That’s detrimental for your barbell and a post-workout wipe down can add years to the life of your bar
The above measures will help maintain a smooth, reliable spin, as well as help protect against the elements.
